This is Mozart and Da Ponte's Don Giovanni exactly as they wrote it — the vocal lines, the harmonies, the great scenes, all intact — held together by a new Spanish libretto that speaks to today's audience the way Da Ponte spoke to his. The seducer, his servant Leporello, the women whose lives he upends, the murdered Commendatore who returns from the dead to drag him to hell: every figure is here, and the opera ends where it has always ended — in damnation.
